Project Overview

Using strategic materials, we created a comprehensive suite that clearly communicates information effectively to a wide audience. Multiple considerations were taken into account such as:

  • Language: All materials were made in both Inuktitut and English, with Inuktitut always appearing first.
  • Education Levels: We placed a large emphasis on duplicating all information in a visual and written format whenever possible, using maps, icons, and charts so people can digest information without having to read every word. There were also interpreters at the events who could explain all the displayed information and answer any questions people may have.
  • Culture: Following the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Call To Action 92, we ensured every step taken in the consultation process, material creation, and messaging was culturally sensitive and meaningful, placing Indigenous community members and their land / land uses first.

The Website

The home base for all materials, notifications, and information was the website. We tailored NNC's current website to host open house information, resources and FAQs so people can view them anytime.

The Ballot

This ballot of project alternatives was the deciding factor and community voice for Iqaluit's energy future. Knowing the importance of this deliverable we took the upmost care in every design decision:

  • Security features: We added various features to safeguard the vote count. The paper was textured, each ballot had a unique ID number, and the illustration on the back was complex and difficult to replicate.
  • User friendly: Designing for two languages can get crowded. The voting instructions and checklist was structured to avoid confusion and ensure people knew what they were voting for.
  • Culturally appropriate: The illustration on the back was designed to represent the culture and journey Iqaluit is on. The Inukshuk used to guide travelers, contained seven stars of the night sky inside its shape - representing the constant consideration of the seven generations to come. The stars were the consultations Ursa Major and Minor, which appeared above Iqaluit the night of the open house voting.

The Posters

Posters were created for each project alternative with details including pros, cons, and types of energy being considered, as well as information identified in the preliminary engineering and environmental studies.
